What an incredible start to this adventure! After spending a short half day in Lima, we headed out to the Amazon to get into the nitty gritty of the jungle. I have never been as hot, sweaty, or amazed all at the same time. The air had that muggy clean smell that you imagine rain forests would. It’s fresh and sweet all at the same time.
If I could, I would tell you about every minute I spent in the jungle, but instead I will just hit some of my personal highlights. We were able to stay in a genuine jungle lodge (hatch roofs and all) only accessible by boat. Our days were spent sweating, hiking, sweating, eating fresh picked fruit and freshly caught fish, playing with monkeys, sweating, exploring, and, of course, more sweating. Imagine swimming in the Amazon under a setting sun while watching pink dolphins surface only dozens of feet from you. Imagine catching piranhas on traditional bamboo poles, then being able to eat them later for dinner. Imagine drinking water from a vine in the jungle, playing with baby monkeys, and dancing with native Indians in the deep of the jungle. This has been my life for the past 3 days, and I am so sad to be leaving the amazing Amazon behind. It has been unforgettable and I cannot wait to see what other treasures Peru holds for me!
