I fell in love with this place, the moment I looked out the plane window as it started descending. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. The land was full of lush, green mountains and Rio De Janeiro was situated in them. All my worries subsided.
The brave ones of the group set off on an adventure of a life-time today. Hang gliding! Only a few us told ourselves to ignore the fear, and just do it! I mean, you can’t go to Brazil without ticking this off your bucket list!
Our adventure continued in Paraty, a small, fairly chill city in Brazil with an ocean view and lots to do! Time went by really fast during our time spent here. We had a bit of time to hang out on the beach, but our days were pretty packed for the most part.
After imagining a cheap third world old broken down hostel, it was certainly a breathe of fresh air arriving at a colourful and welcoming hostel, Bonita. The afternoon kicked off with greetings from our friendly tour guides Mike and Leo, which soon lead to the group introductions and icebreakers – we certainly could pick a few party animals in the group.
Imagine a place in the middle of the ocean, where cars don’t exist, and the only way to commute is by foot or by boat; where palm trees grow sideways out of the ocean banks; where the water is so blue and unbelievably clear; where the beaches are all incredibly amazing; where everywhere you look the jungle and all its beautiful sounds surround you; this my friends is paradise and they call it Ilha Grande. Our stay in Ilha Grande was such a special experience.
Our final destination was Huacachina, the Desert Oasis! This is a tiny tourist place just outside the city of Ica and wow, is it awesome! It is a tiny lake surrounded by massive sand dunes; so, of course Sand boarding and Dune Buggying was an absolute must.
What an incredible start to this adventure! After spending a short half day in Lima, we headed out to the Amazon to get into the nitty gritty of the jungle. I have never been as hot, sweaty, or amazed all at the same time. The air had that muggy clean smell that you imagine rain forests would. It’s fresh and sweet all at the same time.
First two nights in Lima have already been unforgettable! Between the hormonal showers (either scolding hot or ice cold), the culture, the crazy taxi rides, and the night life, there is nothing you would not remember about this place!
Thank goodness I’m finally here! I flew to Lima last night from the Dominican Republic where I was doing a volunteer trip. Including the two flights, cab rides and layovers I was travelling for what seemed like an eternity (wasn’t actually that long haha).
My trip has been very interesting thus far! First day in Cusco and I ended up spending a couple of days in the hospital with 2 types of salmonella poisoning. Although that put a downer on my trip, I could not have asked for a better group of people to support me through it!
